November Parent Letter

November 14, 2017

Argonaut Parents and Guardians,

It seems like just yesterday that the weather was warm and we were starting the school year. But when I woke up this morning, there was frost on my car, and when I look at my calendar, I see that we are already over three months into the school year; in fact, we have officially reached the end of the second marking period. This means that we have only 5 more weeks left in the first semester before final exams. I would encourage all parents and guardians to log into PowerSchool to check on your child’s progress. Click here to get to PowerSchool or visit the link on Argo’s home page. It is my experience that the winter months and the holiday season can be a very stressful time of year for students, so I would like to take this opportunity to remind all families about the resources we offer at Argo to help students when they are struggling and about the new opportunities available to students this winter season.

Our new Argo Hour period is a great way for students to catch up in all of their classes. Argo Hour happens four days a week, directly after period 5. If students are failing a class, they are automatically assigned to visit the teacher of the class they are failing so they can get the help they need. Though it is only 13 weeks old, we are already seeing great improvements because of Argo Hour: we have 20% fewer failures this year than we did at the same time last year. This is truly great news! Even if a student is not failing a class, he or she has the Argo Hour period to catch up on homework or to visit teachers to ask questions. We encourage all students to use this time to seek out their teachers and get their work done; I would ask that you reinforce this message at home. In addition to Argo Hour, we still have Math and Science Resource as well as Argo After Hours in the LRC before and after school.

Because of our school-wide One2One initiative, all students have a computer issued to them by the school. This means that all students have constant access to assignments and projects from their classes. Students consistently report that One2One makes it easier to communicate with their teachers, make up work when they are absent or sick, and stay organized. One way to help your child if he or she is struggling is to direct them to their Canvas Page. This is the webpage they can go to access all of their classes; it also has a list of assignments that they need to complete from each of their teachers.

In addition to great teachers, Argo also has a terrific staff of professionals trained to work with students who have social and emotional needs. Our counselors and social workers are ready and able to meet with any student. If you think this would be helpful for your child, please give your child’s counselor a call or send an email. We know that students cannot be at their best if they have physical or emotional concerns preventing them from focusing on their academic work. We want to be partners with you to make sure all students can be at their best every day.

Last but not least, the winter season means a whole new set of ways that students can get involved at Argo. New teams are starting to practice and new clubs are starting as well. Every morning we send an email to all students listing ways to get involved. Please visit our website or call us if you have questions about winter extra-curricular opportunities. Our teachers and coaches work hard to make sure there is something for everyone at Argo.

New Argo opportunities are not just for students. There are also ways for parents and community members to get involved at Argo. We continue to encourage all families to attend our Parent Universities and our Booster and PFA meetings. Please check our website or give me or Dr. Kingsfield a call. A strong school community partnership is essential to our success.

Thank you for all of your help and support. Go Argonauts!

Dr. Chris Covino
